I have been making these cookies for well over a decade now, always at Christmas. They are a crisper butter cookie, flavored with chocolate, rum, and walnuts. I got the recipe from a friend who made them for a cookie exchange, and she had gotten the recipe from a magazine. I don’t even remember now what publication they came from, as I never saw the original source. Maybe I like the name best–“ribbon” cookies sound so Christmasy and festive.
Chocolate Ribbon Cookies
1/2 c. butter
1/2 c. shortening
Combine and beat for 30 seconds, then add the following items, one at a time, beating after each addition:
1 cup sugar
1/2 tsp soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 egg
2 T milk
1 tsp vanilla
3 cups flour
Now, divide the dough into two parts. Mix in:
Dough Part I: 1/3 cup melted semi sweet chocolate chips (melt in microwave), 1/2 cup finely chopped nuts
Mix in Dough Part II: 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips (not melted), 1/4 tsp rum flavoring
Take a greased loaf pan and layer the two doughs, making four layers. Chill 4-24 hours, or 3 hours in the freezer. Dump dough out of loaf pan and slice about 3/8’’ thick to get a stripe. Bake at 375 for 10 minutes or until lightly browned on the bottom. Best if not overcooked.
